AN INVESTIGATION into the death of a young man following a road crash in Drogheda, Co Louth, has been launched by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
His death was one of four fatalities on the roads over the weekend, including that of an elderly man in Cork, a woman (65) in Derry and a man in his 20s in Co Roscommon.
The 21-year-old man died yesterday morning following the crash at about 8.30am on Saturday on Rathmullan Road, Drogheda.
It is thought he was driving a stolen car and was being pursued by a Garda car for a short distance, when he crashed.
He was transferred to the Mater hospital in Dublin but died early yesterday morning.
The incident was referred to the ombudsman on Saturday as required under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, if there is any Garda involvement.
The ombudsman has appealed for witnesses to the incident or for anyone with information, to contact them at 1890 600 800.
In Co Cork, an man died in Cork University Hospital yesterday after he was struck by a car as he crossed the road at Dromahane Cross, Dromore, near Mallow, Co Cork.
He was named as Jim Barrow (80), a widower and former worker at Mallow sugar factory. Prayers were offered at St Peter the Apostle’s Catholic Church in Dromahane yesterday for Mr Barrow.
In Derry, a pedestrian was killed on Saturday when she was struck by a car at Lecky Road. She was identified as Patricia Duffy from Lisfannon Park, in Bogside, of the city.
Ms Duffy was walking home from Mass which she attended daily in St Columba’s Church, Long Tower.
In Roscommon, gardaí have appealed for information about an incident in which a pedestrian in his 20s died after being struck by a car at about 4am on Saturday on the N4 between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon.
