An inquest into the death of a leading loyalist was adjourned today after witnesses failed to turn up.

The body of George Legge, a former senior UDA man in east Belfast, was found in a field at Carryduff in January 2001.

Legge (37), of Island Street, was stabbed and slashed to death before his corpse was dumped. He was killed after what was believed to have been a row over missing drugs money.

The inquest at Belfast Coroner's Court was adjourned after only two of the five listed witnesses turned up.

No members of Legge's family showed up for the hearing. HM Coroner for Greater Belfast John Leckey is expected to make inquiries about the absentees before deciding what should happen next.

Detectives investigated a possible link between the murder and a fire at the Bunch of Grapes bar on the city's Beersbridge Road, the day after the discovery of Legge's body.

The pub was run by loyalist leader Jim Gray who was shot dead outside his father's east Belfast home last October.
