At an inquest yesterday into the death of Mercy Sister Joan Bowles, killed when her car was hit by a train, the coroner, Dr Timothy Casey, said Limerick city "is poorer for her passing".
Aged 59, and a native of Doon, Co Limerick, she was well known for her work with disadvantaged youths and was director and founder of the Limerick youth service.
She was killed on July 19th at an unmanned level crossing at Woodfarm, near Dromkeen, on the main Limerick to Tipperary road.
The foreman of the jury expressed sympathy to the family and Sisters of Mercy, and the jury recommended that CIE should examine the use of unmanned level crossings.
They suggested that a beacon be provided to warn people when a train is approaching.
A verdict of death in accordance with the medical evidence was returned by the jury.
