Gardaí in Galway have confirmed that they had to send extra members of the force to the Aran island of Inis Oirr last weekend when a series of disturbances broke out over the bank holiday.

No one was injured and no property was damaged, however, according to the gardaí, who say most of the disturbances were "alcohol-fuelled".

It is understood that the trouble began among visitors who took the ferry from Doolin, Co Clare, on Friday.

Some 40 passengers brought drink, which was then transported by jarveys up to the island campsite.

Inis Oirr has no Garda station, but a garda was posted on the island for the weekend.

After trouble broke out on Friday night, a sergeant and three more gardaí were sent out from Salthill station, which is responsible for the Aran islands.

The manager of the Inis Oirr co-operative, Mr Paddy Crowe, said yesterday that heavy drinking went on throughout the weekend, and he was confronted at one point in the campsite.

"On Saturday night, they lit a big bonfire after day-long drinking and ripped the doors from a toilet and shower block.

"Loud rave music was continuously being played and there was an awful atmosphere there. Empty bottles were being thrown all over the place, regardless of anyone's safety," he said.

Mr Crowe said visitors arriving on Saturday were advised to stay away from the campsite for their own safety.

He described a "real atmosphere of fear" in which visitors fled the campsite. When the troublemakers left on Monday, a considerable amount of litter and debris had to be cleared up.
