Arrests linked to death of man  in Tullamore

Four people have been arrested in connection with the death of a man in Tullamore last month.

Three men and a woman were questioned at Tullamore and Portlaoise Garda stations yesterday having been arrested in the Tullamore area.

The arrests are part of ongoing investigations into the death of 27-year-old Derek McDonagh, who was killed outside his parents’ home in the Arden View estate on September 20th. Richard Donovan (22) of the Unofficial Halting Site, Kilcruttin, Tullamore, has already been charged with the murder of the father of one.

Clare 'boil water notice' continues

Clare County Council says it expects a “boil water notice” affecting more than 700 people in the Ballyvaughan area could be lifted next week but that the completion of a €5 million water scheme contract will be required to provide a long-term resolution to water quality issues there.

There have been serious water quality issues in north Clare for several months.

Golf course falls foul of vandals

A golf course has been dug up and damaged for the third time this year. Thousands of euro of damage was caused at Gweedore Golf Club in Co Donegal after vandals drove over its fairways and greens.

The late-night incident has left many parts unplayable and has caused anger locally. Club spokesman Eugene McCafferty said members are “sickened” after the latest incident.

Farmer dies after being gored by bull

A 38-year-old farmer has died in hospital after being gored by a bull. Tomás Tierney was attacked on the family farm at Cloghans Hill, Kilmaine, Co Mayo, on Wednesday evening.

His mother discovered him lying prone in a field with the bull standing by aggressively. She raised the alarm but when help arrived it was difficult to attend to the victim because of the bull.

Although Mr Tierney was said to be capable of talking to medical personnel when carried from the scene, he later died.
