Funeral of murdered Athlone woman

The funeral of Athlone murder victim Marie Greene was held in the town yesterday.

Fr Charlie Healy told about 300 mourners, led by the victim’s mother, Winnie, at St Mary’s Church, that the area was shocked and saddened by her death. The 37 year old’s body was found in a bog outside the town on Tuesday. She had been missing since leaving her home in St Mel’s Terrace on February 13th.

Fr Healy, who concelebrated Mass, said the events of the past two weeks had left “people across our town bewildered”.

“We gather knowing that the story of Marie’s life and death has yet to be told, and that there will be more pain for all concerned when that happens.”

Retired soldier Jimmy Devaney (62), from Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone, was charged with her murder on Tuesday evening.

Manx2 to withdraw Belfast-Cork route

The airline at the centre of the Cork airport crash that claimed the lives of six people this month yesterday announced that it was withdrawing its service between Belfast and Cork.

Manx2.com said it was withdrawing its Belfast-Cork service following an operational review of the route undertaken in the wake of the incident at Cork airport on February 10th when its scheduled service from Belfast crashed in fog while landing.

Manx2.com said yesterday that in order to minimise the impact to passenger travel plans, the service will be maintained until Sunday, March 13th. All passengers booked to travel on the Belfast-Cork service on or after March 14th will be given a full refund.
