Feud over ancient temple continues

BANGKOK– Thai and Cambodian soldiers exchanged fire on a disputed stretch of their border yesterday, witnesses said, the third flare-up in three days in an ancient feud over territory surrounding a 900-year-old Hindu temple.

The fighting occurred despite Thailand’s ceasefire announcement on Saturday following clashes in the area that killed at least five people. – (Reuters)

Fifty die in Sudan army mutiny

JUBA,Sudan – At least 50 people have died as a mutiny in the Sudan army spread through towns in oil-producing Upper Nile state, stoking tension as the south prepares for independence, the military said yesterday.

Heavy fighting, with tanks and machine guns, first broke out in the politically sensitive southern town of Makalal on Thursday, when members of an army unit refused to redeploy with their weapons to the north and turned on other members of their unit.

Fighting then spread from Makalal, Upper Nile’s capital, to the settlements of Melut and Paloich on Friday and Saturday, state officials said. – (Reuters)

Tunisia suspends former ruling party

TUNIS– Tunisia's interior minister has decided that all activities of former ruling party RCD will be suspended to prevent a breakdown in security, state television and an interior ministry source said yesterday.

The source did not want to be identified.

Scientists map allergy hotspots

A postcode map of allergies has been produced for the first time, bringing scientists one step closer to uncovering the environmental causes of the severe reactions that affect one in three of the UK population.

By examining almost 6,000 referrals from GPs over 11 years, as well as consultants' letters and population data, researchers have been able to trace how allergy hotspots develop. – ( Guardianservice)
