Man assaulted stepson (5)

A man who assaulted his five-year-old stepson because the child soiled his pants has received a two-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The 29-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assaulting the child on July 9th, 2002 at their north Dublin home.

Judge Michael White described his behaviour as "inexcusable" and said he had taken his anger out on a young, innocent child. He suspended the two-year sentence on condition that the man enter into a good behaviour bond.

Elderly women hurt in robbery

A man who caused severe injuries to two elderly women while trying to rob their handbags has been given a four-year sentence by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Michael White told Keith Howe (25), Dowland Road, Walkinstown, "those people's lives will never be the same again," referring to the victims who are 75 and 85 and suffered broken arms when attacked by Howe.

Howe pleaded guilty to robbery on January 29th and February 12th last from the two women, who were shopping in the Crumlin area. Judge White suspended two years of the four-year sentence.

Robbery forced shop to close

A woman whose robbery with a male accomplice of an elderly lady in her shop led to its closure after 50 years' trading has been given a three-year suspended sentence.

Sinead Cusack (31), Mountainview Drive, Rathfarnham, pleaded guilty to robbery at Tierney's chemist shop on Ballinteer Road, Dundrum, on January 20th, 2003.

Her accomplice, Paul Rock (37), Bolton Street, Dublin, was found guilty of robbery and false imprisonment and was earlier sentenced to eight years with two suspended.

Councillor for court next month

A former Fianna Fáil councillor is due in court next month over alleged misuse of local authority funds.

Cllr Michael "Stroke" Fahy, now Independent, has been directed to attend Kinvara District Court on November 14th, and is understood to be denying the allegations.

Sentences for two men in stolen car

Two men in a stolen car, which twice crashed into a Garda patrol car during a high-speed chase, have been sentenced by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Stephen Whelan (22), Fatima Mansions, Dublin, pleaded guilty to unlawfully taking the vehicle and to dangerous driving. He was given five years, with two years and six months suspended, and has been disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Stuart Whelan (18), Dolphin House, Dolphin's Barn, Dublin, received a two-year suspended sentence for allowing himself to be carried in the car on January 11th, 2005.

Garda Martin Lord of Rathfarnham Garda station said he saw the two men in the silver Mitsubishi Lancer which was reversed at speed and which collided with the passenger side of the patrol car. The Mitsubishi broke a red light on Butterfield Avenue, turned right on to Rathfarnham Road and was driven at speed through another red light, continuing along the wrong side of the road. It went the wrong way around a roundabout at Sandyford Road, narrowly missing another vehicle.

Garda Lord said the driver then crashed the car into the patrol car a second time, at which point he got out and arrested him.

Boy charged with theft of minibus

A 15-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the theft of a minibus from an old people's home, which was later found destroyed by fire.

The teenager appeared at the Dublin Children's Court yesterday charged with unlawfully taking the minibus from the Glenview Lodge home, in Tallaght, Dublin, on September 30th.

Judge Catherine Murphy ordered a copy of the Garda evidence to be furnished to the defence by October 28th. The boy was remanded on bail until November 11th when he is to indicate a plea.
