Murdered woman to be buried today

The funeral takes place today of Celine Cawley, who died last Monday after being attacked in her Dublin home

Ms Cawley (46) will be buried after Mass at the Church of the Assumption in Howth. Her family has indicated that the interment will be private.

Kerry man dies in Cork crash

Gardaí at Millstreet have named the man who died as a result of a crash yesterday at Tullig, Millstreet, Co Cork, as Tom Dowling (27), Woodlawn Road, Killarney, Co Kerry.

He received serious injuries in the single-vehicle incident when his car crashed into a wall and he died after being taken to Cork University Hospital.

A man who died in a crash at Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, last Thursday has also been named. Gardai said he was Martin Gorham (36), Bornacoola, Carrick-on- Shannon.

Cocaine found in haversack

A 32-year-old South African man who had travelled from Santiago, Chile, is due in court today over a €175,000 cocaine seizure at Dublin airport. Revenue and Customs officers found 2.5kg of the drug hidden in the back support of two haversacks on Sunday evening.

Girl (16) dies from meningitis

A schoolgirl from Strabane, Co Tyrone, has died from meningitis. Terri Devine (16), a pupil at the Holy Cross College, had "flu symptoms" while sitting mock examinations last week.

College officials yesterday contacted the parents of the other year 12 pupils to offer advice and reassurance.

Teen remanded on heroin charge

A teenager arrested last month for having about €25,000 worth of heroin, has been further remanded in custody pending directions from the DPP.

Judge David Anderson remanded the teenager until early January for the DPP's direction on whether the case is to be kept in the Children's Court or instead be sent forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Man bailed on explosives charge

A Co Galway man charged with the possession of nearly 18kg of industrial explosives has been remanded on continuing bail following his appearance at Galway District Court yesterday.

Oliver Mannion (30), Oranmore, Co Galway, is charged with having an explosive substance on September 6th.

Armed raid on Argos store

A substantial amount of cash was recovered by gardaí after an armed robbery at a busy Argos store on Sunday. The raid took place in the Liffey Valley shopping centre, Clondalkin, Dublin, at about 6.40pm.

The raiders are understood to have been armed with a small axe and a mallet. They went to the counter, took the male manager to the cash office and removed a substantial amount of cash. They escaped through the back of the building towards the Greenfort estate.

Gardaí were called and discovered a holdall bag with a substantial amount of cash, clothes and balaclavas, at the rear of the premises.

Former Mayo TD Miko Browne dies

A former Dáil deputy, Miko Browne, whose father Pat also served as a TD in Co Mayo, has died. Mr Browne, an auctioneer in Ballina, represented the old North Mayo constituency from 1961 to 1965. He had been elected to Mayo County Council at just 21.

Mr Browne, who is survived by his wife, Carmel, their five daughters and two sons, will be buried today in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina, following Requiem Mass at noon in St Patrick's Church.
