Traveller Focus Week launched

The annual Traveller Focus Week was launched in Dublin yesterday. Its programme aims to raise awareness of the contribution of Travellers to society and to develop Travellers' pride in their Irish identity.

The week's events were launched with a photography exhibition at Filmbase in Temple Bar and a performance last night of John & Josie, by Rosaleen McDonagh.

Traveller Focus Week is organised by the Irish Traveller Movement, the National Traveller Women's Forum and Pavee Point Travellers Centre.

Three questioned about rape

Detectives are questioning a man in Co Monaghan about the rape of a 24-year old woman near Castleblayney early last month.

The man (56) was one of three people including another man and a woman, who were detained on Saturday at Castleblayney. All three were being interviewed yesterday; the other man and the woman were released earlier.

The young woman was raped on a ditch on the main Doohamlet-Castleblayney Road after she was attacked by one of a number of men travelling in a car which stopped beside her as she was walking home early on November 6th.

Ards rugby player dies on pitch

A rugby player who collapsed and died during a junior league match in Co Down had been a last- minute replacement, friends said last night. Father-of- four David Rainey (49) suffered a suspected heart attack during the second half of Ards 3rds home game against a Cooke XV on Saturday.

Mr Rainey, a television repair engineer from Comber, Co Down, normally carried out coaching duties at the club but he agreed to turn out to make up the numbers. - (PA)

Mobile homes damaged in fire

Monaghan gardaí are investigating a suspected arson attack on a number of mobile homes at a trade centre in Castleblayney.

One fireman was injured and taken to Monaghan General Hospital as fire crews battled to contain the fire early on Saturday.

A number of new mobile homes were on display for sale at the complex which is adjacent to the main Dublin/Derry Road on the outskirts of Castleblayney.

The injured fireman, who was attached to the Co Monaghan Fire Service, was treated for smoke inhalation and burns to his back.

Marilyn Manson weds in Tipperary

Rock singer Marilyn Manson has married his girlfriend in Ireland at the weekend. Manson (36) - real name Brian Warner - wed Heather Sweet (33) in front of about 60 guests at Castle Gurteen, the home of a friend in Kilsheelan, Co Tipperary, yesterday, People magazine said.

Sweet is a burlesque dancer who uses the stage name Dita Von Teese. They have been dating for four years and Manson proposed at their Los Angeles home in March 2004, People said.

It was the first marriage for both.

Manson wore a black silk taffeta tuxedo and Von Teese was in royal purple silk taffeta with a corset. They were married in a non- denominational ceremony conducted by underground filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, a friend of Manson. - (PA)
