Death of Mr Justice Sean O'Leary
High Court judge Mr Justice Seán O'Leary has died, the Courts Service has confirmed.
A spokesman for the service said it had learned of his death yesterday evening, which followed an illness, with the "very deepest regret".
"He was a very able and decent man. He had many friends in the legal community and all of us will miss him greatly," the spokesman said. "We share in the loss with his family and friends."
Man rescued after plunge from bridge
Gardaí braved freezing waters yesterday to rescue a man who jumped off the bridge at Custom House Quay in Wexford. Stunned onlookers saw the man, who is local, jump at 2.15pm.
"He was standing near the middle of the bridge and then jumped in," traffic warden Pat Sheridan said.
Gardaí James Maher, John Joe Sinnott, Eric O'Sullivan and John O'Flynn arrived on the scene within minutes and brought the man to safety.
The gardaí and the man were treated for hypothermia and minor injuries at Wexford General Hospital.
Garda plea over missing teenager
Gardaí are seeking assistance in tracing 14-year-old Giulio Lyons who is missing from Tallaght, in Dublin, since last Thursday. He is described as 1.57 metres tall with brown eyes and dark hair. When last seen he was wearing a black and grey tracksuit, navy baseball cap, a multicoloured scarf and white trainers. It is believed he may have visited Rathmines and the city centre. Anyone with information is asked to contact Tallaght Garda station at 01-6666000.
Garda seek help to locate Cork woman
Gardaí in Co Cork are seeking help from the public in locating a missing woman, 48-year-old Breda Morrissey from Lotamore Drive, Mayfield, Cork, who left her home on Thursday evening 14th December.
She is described as 1.80m (5' 11"), of slim build, with blue eyes and short brown/blond hair. She is missing some front teeth.
A spokesman said : "Our investigation to date tell us that she was in a hostel in London for a few nights before returning to Dublin by bus and ferry on Wednesday morning 20th December at 7am. We are satisfied that she actually arrived at Busáras and now believe she may be in a hostel or bed and breakfast in Dublin city."
Man wounded in gun attack
A man was being treated for shotgun wounds yesterday after being shot at his home in Dublin's Clondalkin the previous night. A man is believed to have fired shots through the window of a house at Riversdale Crescent.
Gardaí confirmed one person in the house was hit but the injuries were not thought to be serious.
It is believed the victim was a man in his mid-20s.
Recycle waste packaging appeal
The public were urged to think green this Christmas with households expected to discard millions of bottles of wine and beer. Households are expected to generate about 82,000 tonnes of used packaging during the festive season. Recycling company Repak is aiming to collect and recycle about 40 per cent of this waste. It is estimated 164 million drink containers - including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cans and bottles - will be consumed.
Andrew Hetherington, chief executive of Repak, said: "As part of our campaign to encourage people to recycle, we are reminding people not to burn their packaging waste but to make sure it is recycled.We are also asking people not to litter at recycling centres or bottle banks if they find the containers are already full."
