Widow of 'Ginger Man' dies in Madrid

Limerick-born Pamela O'Malley, died suddenly in Madrid yesterday at the age of 76.

The widow of Gaynor Crist, who was the inspiration for JP Donleavy's novel The Ginger Man, Ms O'Malley came to Spain in 1959, first to Barcelona where she and her husband taught English, before moving to Madrid five years later.

She was a teacher for 34 years at the British School in Madrid where she was loved and respected by dozens of former pupils, many of whom became influential Spanish politicians, members of the judiciary and intellectuals.

She joined the Spanish Communist Party and was jailed for her political activities under the Franco regime. She will be cremated in Madrid tomorrow and, at her request, her ashes will be scattered on Achill Island, Co Mayo, where she spent every summer since childhood.

Body found on Irish Ferries ship

Officials at Irish Ferries were last night liaising with the family of an engineer who was found dead on board one of its vessels at the weekend. The body of the man, who is understood to have been dead for several days, was found on board the Isle of Innisfree on Friday. No foul play is suspected.

It is understood the man was chief engineer, employed by a shipping management firm, Dobson Fleet Management (DFM), which is based in Cyprus. Capt Peter Waller of DFM confirmed last night that an employee had been found dead on board an Irish Ferries ship on Friday. A spokesman for Irish Ferries said the deceased man was British.

Farmer dies in tractor accident

An elderly farmer died in an accident on his farm on Saturday evening. Gardaí said bachelor Tommy McClay (71), Trummon, Laghey, Co Donegal, was killed when he became trapped by machinery connected to a tractor.

Detention order on fishing vessels

Two Irish-registered fishing vessels have had a detention order against them extended at a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday.

Judge Mary Fahy granted a 48-hour extension of the detention order imposed by gardaí on skippers Eric Murphy and Donal O'Neill, both of Castletownbere, Co Cork and masters of the vessels Eilean Croine and Sparkling Star.

Sgt Frank Larkin said he required a further 48 hours under the Fisheries Consolidation Act to conduct further inquiries into the vessels' catch quota.

Drugs seizure in Ballyfermot

Gardaí seized a quantity of heroin and cocaine after searching a house in Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot shortly after 1am yesterday. A man in his 20s was last night being detained in Ballyfermot Garda station under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

Éamonn Casey welcomed back

Former bishop of Galway Dr Éamonn Casey (78) was welcomed to his new residence in the south Galway parish of Beagh/Shanaglish at the weekend. Fr Paddy Callanan, parish priest of Kilbeacanty and Shanaglish, made a statement welcoming Dr Casey at Mass yesterday.
