Limerick men charged with manslaughter

Two Limerick men have been charged with the manslaughter of a man whose body was found under a bridge in the city earlier this year.

Keith Ryan (25), Farranshone, Limerick, died after suffering serious head injuries near the Shannon Bridge on May 25th.

Appearing before Judge Tom O'Donnell at Limerick District Court were Thomas Ryan (23), Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, and Tony O'Brien (23), Baker Place.

The men were previously charged with assaulting Mr Ryan causing him harm.

Farmers to get EU cheques

Payment of €500 million in EU cheques to Irish farmers begins Monday, Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan said yesterday.

Ireland has argued successfully for the advance payment of part of the EU Single Farm payment because of the summer drought and difficult farming conditions this year.

Ms Coughlan said half of the EU cheque, not due to be paid until December, would begin arriving from next Monday and the balance would be paid from December 1st.

The department has set up lo-call helplines for farmers with specific queries on payments.

Macra to pitch for new recruits

Youth farming organisation Macra na Feirme has begun a major recruitment drive to encourage more young people to become members.

It is running a major radio and print campaign to attract 17- to 35-year-olds. Macra has more non- farming than farming members. The organisation has set up a special lo-call number 1890 700 007 for more information.

Man arrested over knife incident

A man was detained at Mountjoy Garda station, Dublin, last night after he armed himself with a knife and barricaded himself into a flat on Blessington Street at about 2.30pm yesterday. Garda units and a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance crew were called to the scene. He was arrested and taken into custody by 3.45pm.

Irishmen sought in rape inquiry

Cumbria police have confirmed that three men, who possibly live in or have connections with the southeast of Ireland are being sought over alleged rapes in England.

A 17-year-old youth from the southeast has already been arrested under a European warrant in connection with the alleged rapes of three girls, two aged 14 and a third aged 13, at Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria on June 5th, 2005. He is now facing extradition to England.

Cumbria police have confirmed that three other men, who may live in or have connections with the southeast of Ireland, are sought. "We would ask them or anyone who may know anything about this to contact Cumbria Police on 0044 845 3300247," a spokesperson said.
