Ictu leadership to meet again on fiscal compact referendum

The leadership of the trade union movement is to meet again to consider its stance on the referendum on the fiscal compact. The executive committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) made no decision following a meeting on the issue yesterday.

Congress said last night that its executive committee had agreed to reconvene later to continue its discussions on the fiscal compact and the proposed referendum.

Some senior union sources pointed out that at this stage no date had been set by the Government for holding the referendum and the question to be posed has not yet been published.

At its meeting yesterday the congress leadership heard a number of presentations, including ones from economist Karl Whelan and Bernadette Segol, the general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation, to which the trade union movement in Ireland is affiliated.

No date has yet been set for the convening of another meeting on the referendum.
