Iarnrod Eireann budget hearings begin today

Investigations into cost overruns on Iarnród Éireann's new signalling system by an Oireachtas Committee are to begin today.

Investigations into cost overruns on Iarnród Éireann's new signalling system by an Oireachtas Committee are to begin today.

The inquiry into the signalling contract, which is now expected to cost up to three times the original estimate, will call up to 100 witnesses.

The project to replace the existing mechanical signalling system with an electronic one was due to cost of £14m. But the estimated end cost has now spiraled to £40m due to delays and technical problems.

The committee, under the Chairmanship of Mr Sean Doherty is also set to investigate the departure of a number of Iarnród Éireann executives to join the company that won the signalling contract, Modern Networks Limited.

Mr Doherty will make an opening statement to the committee today and formal hearings will begin on September 10th.
