Hundreds of Palestinians today hurled stones at the offices of Palestinian leader Mr Yasser Arafat in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

They demanded an end to "repression" and called for the release of prisoners.

The demonstrators, claiming to represent the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, were kept back by a cordon of riot police.

The were shouting "free our prisoners," "the Palestinian Authority imprisons us" and "stop the repression".

After being blocked by the police, the demonstrators moved in the direction of the Israeli tanks only several dozen metres away that have kept Mr Arafat under siege since December 3rd.
