Former SDLP leader and Nobel peace prize laureate John Hume was involved in a car crash yesterday.
The two-car collision happened near Greencastle, Co Donegal, close to the border with Derry.
An SDLP spokesman said Mr Hume was travelling with his wife Pat when the accident happened at 5.30pm and both suffered minor injuries.
"Former SDLP leader John Hume and his wife Pat were involved in a minor road traffic accident at Carrowprassna near Greencastle, Co Donegal at 5.30pm today," he said.
"Two cars were involved in the incident.
"Mr and Mrs Hume were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where they were assessed for minor injuries and subsequently released."
It is understood the driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. It is not known if Mr Hume was driving the car.
Mr Hume is regarded as one of the most important political figures in Northern Ireland history and an architect of the peace process.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 alongside the then-leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, David Trimble. He retired from the leadership of the SDLP in 2001 and lives in Greencastle, Co Donegal, about 27 miles from his native Derry.
