The Health Service Executive is investigating the cause of a breakdown yesterday of one of its ambulances while it was transferring a baby to Dublin from Cork University Maternity Hospital.
It is understood the ambulance developed engine problems near Cahir, Co Tipperary and another ambulance was used to transfer the baby to a hospital in Dublin.
The breakdown comes only days after the HSE ordered that all 2006 model Mercedes ambulances in its fleet be returned for inspection following four incidents in the past year where vehicles burst in to flames.
The vehicle involved in yesterday's incident is being examined by technicians in Dublin.
