NEW YORK - A Delta Air Lines jetliner was forced to make an emergency landing on Wednesday night because of an engine failure that also sent a piece of metal flying onto houses and a car, officials said yesterday.

The pilot declared an emergency after one of the three engines failed just minutes after taking off from New York's La Guardia airport on its way to Tampa, Florida, Delta spokesman Mr Bill Berry said.
