Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has launched an amazing attack on England striker Robbie Fowler as the Reds face up to life without Michael Owen.
With Owen once again sidelined by a hamstring injury, it was thought that Fowler would be the obvious option to take his place in the Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev at Anfield tonight.
Indeed, an extended run in the Liverpool side also looked set to give Fowler the opportunity to stake his claim to deputise for Owen in England's forthcoming World Cup qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford.
However, Houllier has issued a damming verdict on Fowler's current well-being.
The Frenchman told the Daily Mail: "A striker is judged by shots at goal, assists, aerial challenges and link-up play.
"You saw Robbie against Tottenham last Saturday and will surely agree that he can do a lot better in every area.
"We are all aware that he needs to play much better than that and it is down to the boy himself to do something about it.
"I have spoken to him about it and he knows that every single member of staff is ready to help him out, whether it is to do with physical matters or improving his mental edge.
"We will do all we can, but the bottom line is that he has to help himself. He is not as fit as he should be and not as sharp, and he is going to have to address that.
"I am optimistic that he will come back to his best sooner rather than later, but, for now, it is evident that he is below his best."
