Britain's last colonial ruler in Hong Kong, Mr Chris Patten, returned yesterday for the first time since the hand-over to China and said the territory was still "a free society under the rule of the law".
Mr Patten was mobbed by the media at the airport but ignored by Hong Kong's new Chinese rulers.
He is in the former colony to promote his new book, East and West, but he will also meet officials, including new Hong Kong leader Mr Tung Chee-hwa.
