World No. 1 Martina Hingis advanced to the second round of the US Open by beating American Laura Granville 6-2, 6-0 today.

Hingis won the final nine games and needed only 46 minutes to eliminate the 20-year-old US college star, who made 29 unforced errors and foot faulted on match point.

The Swiss star won 12 of the first 13 points and, despite surrendering a break in the fifth game, took the opening set in 28 minutes. She hit four aces and 16 winners.

Her second-round opponent will be either American Jill Craybas or Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya.

Hingis has not won a Grand Slam title since the 1999 Australian Open. She has won three WTA titles this year but none since February.
