Dakar - Heavy firing rang out yesterday around Guinea-Bissau's airport, the final bastion of army rebels defying Senegalese-backed forces loyal to President Joao Bernardo Vieira.

A military source in Senegal's capital, Dakar, said loyalist forces had consolidated their positions in their advance on the rebels, who took up arms against President Vieira on June 7th.
