When you think of physical exercise and working out, maybe it conjures up images of people sweating and puffing as they push themselves to the limit during a run, a cycle or a high-octane exercise class.

But exercise doesn’t always have to be so obviously intense to bring benefit. There’s plenty of room for other approaches too, such as Tai Chi, an ancient martial art that involves gentle and fluid movements.

A 2010 review noted that while more rigorous studies are needed, "Tai Chi appears to be associated with improvements in psychological well-being including reduced stress, anxiety, depression and mood disturbance, and increased self-esteem."
