Lifelines: Approximately 10 per cent of workers in the EU are employed in the health and welfare sector, making healthcare one of the biggest employment sectors in Europe.

According to EU data the work-related accident rate in this sector is 34 per cent higher than the EU average and is responsible for the second-highest rate of work-related musculo-skeletal disorders. Other recognised risk factors include: biological agents; chemical substances; radiological hazards; shiftwork, and violence and accidents in the workplace. Screening childrens' screen time

Medical and other research indicates that many children watch television for long periods and are also spending hours playing computer games. This tends to interfere with their social development and limits the amount of time they spend exercising. Now a new device called a Screenblock has been developed to limit the amount of time children spend watching television or using the computer. It is a simple electronic device that controls the supply of power to the television. It enables parents and carers to choose a daily allowance of screen time, after which it automatically shuts off. It not only prevents long hours of inactivity but encourages children to plan and manage their time more effectively. More details are available at www.screenblock.com

Smoking out the wheeze

Cutting down on children's exposure to passive smoking will reduce the incidence of wheeze they suffer from, according to a study of Irish six- and seven-year-olds. The study also suggests that early recognition and treatment of wheeze, eczema and rhinitis will improve the quality of life for many children.
