The Tánaiste Ms Mary Harney is expected to face a leadership challenge at a general council meeting of the Progressive Democrats National Executive which is underway in Dublin.

Ms Mary Harney

According to a report in the

Irish Examiner

, Mr Brian Russell plans to demand Ms Harney's resignation at the meeting.

The call has been prompted by the Progressive Democrats poor showing in the recent Irish Times /MRBI poll, which gave the party's support at a mere four per cent, Mr Russell claimed.

The poor showing of Fine Gael in the same poll was given as the main reason for the motion of no confidence in Mr John Bruton, who has since been replaced as party leader by Mr Michael Noonan.

However, Mr Russell's leadership challenge has little chance of succeeding. Ms Harney’s spokesman said that she was under no threat from this move.
