London - The Tory leader, Mr William Hague, was accused last night of trying to beef up his image after he told a men's magazine he used to sink up to 14 pints of beer a day during his youth.

Critics claimed Mr Hague was trying to banish the public's view of him as a political obsessive who spent his young days listening to Winston Churchill speeches and reading reports of the House of Commons.
