Lisbon - Heavy gunfire rang out briefly near the airport in Guinea Bissau's capital yesterday as government forces attempted to seize two army barracks held by rebels since Sunday, residents said.

Portuguese news reports say about a dozen people have been killed since dissident soldiers backing a recently sacked armed forces chief rebelled early on Sunday.
