LONDON - Britain has launched a month long amnesty for the more than two million guns that police estimate are held illegally.

The Home Secretary, Mr Michael Howard, told a news conference that the amnesty would do little to prevent a massacre similar to that at Dunblane. But every gun taken out of circulation meant the chances of a similar tragedy were reduced.
