WORKERS AT a site where what will be Cork’s tallest building is being constructed were evacuated yesterday after an old Army grenade was found.

The explosive device was discovered mixed with topsoil at the site of the Elysian building on Eglinton Street near the city centre.

Gardaí were called shortly before 9am and the Collins Barracks-based Army bomb disposal squad made their way to the area.

It is thought the grenade was inadvertently brought to the site from topsoil from the former Murphy’s Army Barracks in Cork. It is not thought the device was planted deliberately.

Workers were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Cork’s €150 million “Elysian quarter” will include more than 200 apartments with underground parking, shops, offices, a creche and gym.

The Elysian tower, at 71m, will be the city’s tallest building, and has been welcomed as a catalyst for further regeneration of Cork city.

The project is expected to be completed later this summer.
