Athens - The embattled Greek Prime Minister, Mr Costas Simitis, opened his Socialist party congress yesterday with a call for unity, saying Greece's course towards Europe was at stake.

Reeling from a fiasco in handling the Kurdish leader, Mr Abdullah Ocalan, who was snatched by Turkey while in Greek care, Mr Simitis stressed that his aim was a financially and politically strong Greece.

Mr Ocalan was arrested last month in Kenya after hiding for 12 days at the Greek embassy in Nairobi. Mr Simitis fired three senior ministers for their botched handling of the affair.
