Greece said yesterday that Turkey needed to act more like a modern European democracy if it wanted to join the EU and it should stop seeing demands for change as bargaining chips.

"Turkey is not being asked to make concessions," a Greek government spokesman, Mr Dimitris Reppas, said. "It is being asked to behave like a modern, democratic, European country."

Mr Reppas was responding to a statement on Monday by the Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Bulent Ecevit, that his country would make no concessions to Greece in order to gain its backing to become a formal EU candidate.
