Perhaps it's only fair that after leading ireland.com's, in association with Carlsberg, Fantasy Football League for three months, Ben Svendgaard was rewarded with first place but try telling that to Tom Burnell and Peter Kelly.
In a nail-biting finale to the season, Svendgaard was overhauled by second placed Burnell with just one round of matches to go. Undeterred, the Celbridge-based great Dane came storming back in the final week to pip Burnell by just six measly points, in so doing claiming the first prize of 10,000 Irish punts.
Burnell’s pain at having relinquished such a mighty lead (his team, the Angus Rip, held a 33 point advantage going into that fateful last week) will have been eased by the second prize of £3,000 while no-one can deny third placed Peter Kelly earned his money. The Dubliner, who picks up a cool £3,000, had no less than five teams in the top ten as he stuck to the old philosophy about eggs and baskets.
As for Svendgaard, he plans to invest his new-found wealth in the holiday of a lifetime. And with the World Cup just over the horizon, and Denmark joining Ireland in the finals, he’ll no doubt be asking the bank manager to order in a few Yen.
