The Governor of Colorado, Mr Bill Owens, said his trip to Omagh today aims to display solidarity between the Co Tyrone town and the Denver suburb of Littleton, scene of a school massacre earlier this year.

Two students in Columbine High School opened fired on fellow students at the school in April, killing 12 teenagers and a teacher before killing themselves. Omagh was the scene of a "Real" IRA explosion a year ago, which killed 29 people.

"The pain and suffering the people of Omagh experienced last August is all too familiar to the citizens of Littleton. Both communities endured the loss of life and livelihood and will be forever impacted by these tragedies.

"By sharing our pain with one another we seek to find strength and encouragement to restore our sense of communities," said Mr Owens.

The Governor will meet victims of the blast and present a donation of £50,000 from the Ireland Funds to the Omagh Fund. The chief executive officer of Omagh District Council, Mr John McKinney, said the donation "heartened" those attempting to rebuild the physical infrastructure of the town and restore people's confidence.

Mr Owens has been accompanied by Mr Jim Lyons, the US Deputy Commerce Secretary, and business leaders from 13 Colorado companies.
