CAPE TOWN - The US Vice President, Mr Al Gore, yesterday refused to speak in public about a proposed South African arms sale to Syria, saying South Africa was already fully aware of Washington's opposition to the deal.

Mr Gore was expected to raise the matter in private talks with Deputy President Thabo Mbeki today. Mr Gore is in South Africa with a high level US delegation that includes five cabinet secretaries for three days of talks to deepen the co operation between the US and South Africa on trade, economics, science, education, health and the environment. He paid a courtesy call on President Mandela yesterday and toured Robben Island, where Mr Mandela was held prisoner for 18 years.
