London - Full-scale trials of three GM crops across England and Wales were given the go-ahead last night by an independent committee of scientists, to the anger of environment groups.

The government feared the trials would have to be abandoned because not enough farmers could be found willing to plant the crops, but ministers were said to have "put a rocket" under the biotech industry and a number of new farmer "volunteers" were found in the last two weeks.
