An 11-year-old girl recently honoured at a civic reception for her bravery in battling cancer has lost her fight against the disease.

Limerick girl Becky Macauley, who wrote a book about her experiences called The Little girl with the Big Headache, died last Friday. Becky from Raheen, Limerick, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2011 and had to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.

Last May, a second tumour was discovered and again she had to undergo surgery. During her time in Beaumont, St Luke’s and Crumlin Children’s hospitals in Dublin, Becky kept a diary about her experiences, which was later published.
