The Irish nominee to the European Court of Auditors, Ms Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, was approved for a second term yesterday by the budgetary control committee of the European Parliament.

Ms Geoghegan-Quinn will begin her second six-year term in March 2006 in the Luxembourg-based post, which pays about €250,000 a year.

The Government nominated Ms Geoghegan-Quinn for a second term last September. Announcing the decision to renominate her, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said she had "given outstanding service on the European Court of Auditors, where she is making a substantial contribution to the work of this important EU institution".
