Gascoigne signs for First Division Burnley

Burnley have confirmed they have signed Paul Gascoigne from Everton for the rest of the season.

Burnley have confirmed they have signed Paul Gascoigne from Everton for the rest of the season.

Clarets boss Stan Ternent has moved quickly to secure the services of the former Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Middlesbrough midfielder.

The 34-year-old former England international's move to Turf Moor comes just three days after David Moyes replaced Walter Smith as boss at Goodison Park.

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby revealed Gascoigne will make his debut in Wednesday's game at Bradford having missed the deadline for tomorrow's local derby against fellow play-off hopefuls Preston.

He said: "We've just missed the deadline but he will be at the match - and he'll be playing for us at Bradford on Wednesday evening."

Kilby admitted Gascoigne's loyalty to Smith had blocked Burnley's initial approach two weeks ago.

He continued: "We were making enquiries for him but he was very loyal to Walter Smith.

"However, when he left Everton there was chink of light for us.

"The deal is to the end of the season then we'll sit down and discuss the future."

The Clarets chief is hopeful the signing of Gascoigne will capture the imagination of the Burnley public as Ian Wright did two years ago.

He added: "It will be like Ian Wright with extra people coming in to see someone of Paul's quality playing for Burnley."

Wright's signing proved a masterstroke both on and off the pitch for Burnley as he scored vital goals towards the end of the campaign to fire the Clarets into Division One.

The arrival of an established England player of Wright's calibre also significantly boosted attendances at Turf Moor _ and the club will hope the signing of Gascoigne will reap similar rewards.

Gascoigne would have been out of contract at Everton in the summer and was rumoured to be considering a move abroad after turning down the possibility of short-term switches to both Burnley and Bristol City.

But the sacking of Smith earlier this week opened the door for a move away from Goodison Park.
