Gardaí last night appealed to the public for information about a grey or silver Volkswagen-type car seen leaving the scene of a gun attack on a man in Carlow town between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. yesterday. The victim was named as Mr Patrick McAndrew (24), from the Tullow area of Co Carlow.

The shooting took place at The Laurels, Tullow Road. Three armed and masked men burst into Mr McAndrew's house, and shot him in the leg in an upstairs bedroom. Gardaí believe a small firearm, possible a handgun, was used. The victim was in the house with his girlfriend.

The crime scene was sealed off yesterday, and officers from the Garda Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination.

The injured man was removed to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny, where he was treated for gunshot injuries. His condition is not life-threatening.
