Garda and PSNI officers will today continue a Special Olympics torch run spanning the island of Ireland.

The police forces are participating in four running routes that began yesterday and will finish in Dublin on Wednesday.

Runs began yesterday in Killarney, Sligo, Dungarvan and Donegal town and will touch on almost every county over the next three days.

A team of 143 Irish athletes will participate in 11 competitions at the World Summer Games in Shanghai next month.

A reception in the Westmanstown Sports Centre in Lucan on Wednesday will mark the formal departure of the athletes to the Olympics.
