Gardai have named the man killed in a Christmas Day car crash outside Ballincollig in Co Cork as Mr John Lynch (31).

Gardai have named the man killed in a Christmas Day car crash outside Ballincollig in Co Cork as Mr John Lynch (31).

Mr Lynch, from Bally burden, Ballincollig, was killed when his car crashed into a stone wall at Carrigane, Ovens, on the main Cork-Macroom Road at around 9 p.m. on Christmas Day.

A companion suffered minor injuries in the single vehicle crash and was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment but was later discharged.

Meanwhile, a German holidaymaker was rescued by Baltimore lifeboat when he got into difficulties in his speedboat while crossing from Hare Island to the West Cork mainland.

The incident began at 3 p.m. on St Stephen's Day when a rope caught the man's outboard engine and it cut out midway across the 400 yard crossing from the island.

An Irish employee of international accountancy firm Price Waterhouse Coopers who was killed in a fire in New York on December 23rd, is to be buried in Bodenstown Cemetery, Co Kildare today. Mr Maigiu Hairis Breathnach died from smoke inhalation when a fire broke out in a neighbouring apartment in New York City.
