Five gardaí were injured during violent incidents in Ballymun this afternoon.

Gardaí were called to St Margaret’s Road at 4.00 pm to deal with a burning car when they were attacked by a number of people from a campsite, a Garda spokeswoman said.

Two officers were hurt in the initial attack. Further gardaí arrived to assist the injured men, and a number of scuffles ensued, during which three more gardaí received facial injuries.

Two Garda patrol cars were damaged during the fracas.

Five people were arrested at the scene, and a number of weapons were recovered in a follow-up search on the campsite, the spokeswoman said.
