A post mortem on the body of a man who died in a Garda cell early this morning has shown he died of natural causes, gardaí said.

The 40-year-old man died in Monaghan Garda after he was arrested at about 1.30am.

"About one hour later he was found in an unconscious state in a cell," a statement from the Garda Press Office said.

"All efforts to resuscitate the man failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene," it added.

A Garda spokesman said the man had been arrested for a "relatively minor" offence. His name will not be released.

A Garda investigation got under way and the officers on duty at the time of the death were interviewed. The man's body was taken to Cavan General Hospital where a post mortem was carried out by the State Pathologist's office.
