Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan, a Scott Medal winner who was seriously wounded in the IRA attack at Adare in June 1996 in which Det Garda Jerry McCabe died, was commended in Limerick Court yesterday for his part in the capture of a man who had just robbed a bank last month.

Mark Kenny (29), formerly of O'Malley Park, who had recently returned to Limerick from England, pleaded guilty to the theft of £790 from the TSB at Glentworth Street on May 22nd. He was remanded for two weeks in custody for sentence.

It was stated in evidence that Det Garda O'Sullivan, who was on patrol duty near the bank, pursued the thief across the road to a nearby pub, where he was arrested by the officer and Det Garda Patrick Keating.

Only £100 was recovered. It was stated that the rest of the money was given to a girl in the pub. Judge Michael Reilly said: "It was fortuitous that she just happened to be in the public house to receive his generosity".
