Gardaí are investigating an attempted robbery at an off licence on Botanic Road, Dublin last night.

Gardaí are investigating an attempted robbery at an off licence on Botanic Road, Dublin last night.

Officers responded to an alarm call at about 9pm and found two men wearing balaclavas inside the premises along with the owner of the store.

The front door was locked from the inside, and one of the men was armed with a hammer. Gardaí entered the shop and were attacked by one of the men who tried to hit the garda with the hammer.

The owner of the shop was assaulted during the incident and suffered minor injuries.

Both men ran towards the store room, and Garda assistance was called for. The men, aged 45 and 25, left the shop through a rear exit and were arrested shortly afterward in the area.

Both men are being held at Mountjoy and Store Street Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
