Playing in front of a rather muted home crowd, Galway settled well and led by double scores 0-8 to 0-4 after 19 minutes. Rory Gantley and Kevin Broderick showing and scoring well.

However, Tipperary, soon found the pace of the game and notched up four quick scores to trail their hosts by just a single point at the break (0-11 to 0-10).

Tipperary were boosted considerably by the introduction of John Carroll at half-time and he soon made his present felt - setting up Benny Dunne for the opening goal after 41 minutes.

Galway endured a miserable spell in the second half that saw them go almost 20 minutes without a score. Tipperary, on the other hand, kept the scoreboard ticking over with Lar Corbett and Eoin Kelly pointing.

Tipperary 'keeper Brendan Cummins had to pick the ball from his net in the closing stages when Damien Hayes latched onto a long Eugene Cloonan free but the three extra points made scant difference to the outcome as the clocked ticked on.

Hayes and Alan Kerins added three late scores to the Galway total but, courageous as it was, Galway's fight back was in vein as Tipperary successfully kept the Tribesmen at arms length in their own backyard.
