The Maze escaper Brendan McFarlane was further remanded until next January when he appeared at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday on charges connected with the 1983 kidnap of a supermarket executive, Mr Don Tidey.

McFarlane (46), of Jamaica Street, Belfast, is charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Tidey between November 24th and December 16th, 1983.

He is also charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and having a firearm for an unlawful purpose at Derrada Wood, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.
