A preliminary post-mortem has failed to identify the cause of death of a 21-year-old Galway man who was found dead at his home yesterday.

The body of John Rooney was found in the bedroom of his family home in the east Galway village of Eyrecourt by his mother.

Gardaí said the death is being treated as suspicious - pending the results of a more detailed post-mortem by the deputy state pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, at Portiuncala Hospital, Ballinasloe.

Local reports of an incident in the village of Eyrecourt on Sunday night after the pubs closed, which could be connected to the death, were being investigated by gardaí.

A number of people have been interviewed in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station, at 091-841222.
