The funeral has taken place in Newry of the man shot dead in his car in Dundalk, Co Louth, on Monday morning. Mr Richard McFerran moved to the South after a previous attempt on his life last October.

The funeral left the family home in the Co Down town yesterday for midday Mass in St Michael's Church, Killeen, with burial in the adjoining graveyard.

He is survived by his wife, Una, and his three children, Cara, Gail and Mary-Jayne.

Mr McFerran was discovered slumped over the wheel of his Mercedes car outside a town-centre apartment building in Dundalk by a passing postman.

The shooting bore all the hallmarks of a professional hit and sources suggest the motive may stem from a dispute in the man's personal life. Gardai have ruled out a paramilitary or criminal motive for the killing.
